The Problem with the Corner Problem

ROOM 003: a corner problem study. Technology II, UCLA AUD, Winter 2014. Instructor: Erin Besler. Rhino, Grasshopper, Illustrator, Kuka robots.
This video was produced as part of a final project for a technology seminar at UCLA’s Department of Architecture and Urban Design.
The “corner problem” is how Greek and Roman architects struggled with corner conditions in classical buildings. We designed a space (Room 003) and built a 1:1 scale mock-up using gypsum board and metal studs. The ornate mouldings were designed with classical proportions and carved from foam blocks using Kuka robots, to study how mouldings meet in corners.
