Rings

Personal project, Fall 2014. Rhino, Grasshopper, V-Ray, Photoshop.

This personal project was developed after a 2 weeks grasshopper workshop i took at UCLA. As my onw experimentation with the new tool I started using grasshopper to generate automatic variations of the same typology of ring. On the next page are some of the variation that were automatically created.
Everything is realized with Rhino, Grasshopper and some script for grasshopper to automate the rendering in V-Ray and then be able with just one click to get infinite renders of these variations.

These rings come all form the same grasshopper definition: the section of those rings is a central circle with circles around it disposed radially wich are extruded and twisted in a ring shape. The dimensions, number and distance of every circles of the section change in every ring. After working on the definition I used some plugins to automate the rendering, so to have hundred different rings generated and rendered with one click. I left the computer render overnight and when I woke up my project folder was filled with images. Here you see some of them.

The process of automatization of designs always interested me, since the Room 003 project I worked on at UCLA I started to get more into how to generate different options for a design. based on predefined constrains. Grasshopper was then my program of choice for this kind of operation because it allows to manipulate a lot of data and let you play with many options.

After creating so many options I had some problems deciding how to pick the best ones, or the best one. I had an idea, of compere them on pairs and give them a rank based on random pairs comparison. That used to live at /rings-rating on the old site; the voting page is gone from WordPress too.
